Ingested objects can become lodged in the intestines, causing an obstruction. Signs of obstruction include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and loss of appetite. Intestinal Other causes of intestinal obstruction such as tumor, intussusception and trauma.

  • Lump removal:  Lumpectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove localized masses or tumors, typically from the skin or underlying tissues. If there is a suspicion of malignancy, we offer sending the tumor to a specialist for histopathology.

  • Splenectomy: Splenectomy, is a surgical procedure to the removal of the spleen, may be required in dogs and cats due to tumors, trauma, or immune disorders.

  • Mastectomy: Mastectomy, the surgical removal of one or more mammary glands, is a procedure sometimes recommended for female dogs facing mammary tumors or related conditions. These tumors can be benign or malignant, and surgery may be necessary to prevent the spread of cancer and improve the dog's quality of life.

  • Perineal urethrostomy: is a procedure performed on male dogs to address urinary obstructions or other conditions affecting the urethra. This surgery involves creating a new opening in the perineum, the area between the anus and the scrotum, to allow urine to pass directly from the bladder to the outside of the body.

  • Vertical ear canal ablation and polyp removal: Vertical ear canal ablation (VECA) and polyp removal are surgical procedures often performed in dogs to address chronic ear infections and related complications. These conditions can cause discomfort, pain, and recurring infections if left untreated. VECA involves the removal of the vertical portion of the ear canal, which is often narrowed or obstructed due to chronic inflammation or the presence of polyps.

  • Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV): GDV is is life-threatening emergency which requires immediate surgical correction. Gastric dilation which leads to volvulus that causes stomach blockage from stomach twisting. This disorder is commonly seen in large deep chested dogs.

  • Aural haematoma surgery: Aural haematoma is often resulted from excessive head shaking and ears scratching caused by ear infection, ear mites or itchy skin. Surgery involves draining haematoma by having multiple incisions of the ear flap and sutures placed to prevent fluids built up.

  • Rectal prolapse surgery: Prolapse of the rectum could result from chronic diarrhea, constipation, intestinal parasitism or dystocia.  Surgery involves reduction, pulse-string, colopexy or amputation.

  • Hernias repair: Hernias can be congenital or acquired. It occurs when an internal organ or body part protrudes through a tissue or muscle wall. It can be an umbilical, inguinal or abdominal hernia. Hernia repair surgery helps to reduce the hernia content return to its original area and remove any non-viable hernia contents before closing the hernia sac and ring.

  • Exploratory laparotomy: Exploratory laparotomy is a surgical procedure used to investigate and treat abdominal conditions. It’s performed when diagnostic tests like X-rays and ultrasounds don’t provide enough information. Common reasons for this surgery include unexplained abdominal pain, suspected tumors, organ abnormalities, or internal bleeding.

  • Cheiloplasty Lip Fold surgery: is a surgical procedure for treating fold skin dermatitis and correction of the lips. This procedure is also for treating congenital defects or injuries that affect the form or function of the lips. This surgical procedure restores the lip or skin to normal shape. The goal of surgery is to re-establish separate oral and nasal cavities and to reconstruct the nasal cavity floor

Orthopedic Surgeries

At Dr B’s Vet Clinic, we are able to perform the routine orthopaedic surgeries such as patella (knee cap) luxation surgery and cruciate repair surgery.

  • Patella Luxation: Patella luxation surgery corrects a condition where the kneecap (patella) dislocates from its normal position. This surgery is necessary when the patella frequently slips out of place, causing pain, lameness, and joint instability. The surgery aims to realign the patella and deepen the groove in which it sits, stabilizing the knee joint. Early intervention is crucial to prevent long-term joint damage and improve mobility.

  • Cruciate repair: Cruciate repair surgery addresses a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in the knee joint, analogous to the human ACL. The surgery becomes necessary when the ligament is damaged due to injury or degeneration, leading to instability, pain, and reduced mobility. At Dr B’s Vet clinic, we routinely perform the surgery for CCL called, ‘DeAngelis Technique’. This is the most cost-effective procedure suitable for dogs up to 10kg. Prompt surgery helps prevent arthritis and restores normal function to the knee.

  • Amputations of Limbs: Amputation of a limb involves surgical removal of part or the entire limb due to severe injury, irreparable damage, or disease that compromises the limb's function or poses a risk to the pet's health. Common reasons include severe trauma, untreatable infections, tumors affecting the bone or soft tissues, or congenital deformities that impair mobility and cause chronic pain. This procedure aims to improve the pet's quality of life by alleviating pain, preventing further complications, and restoring mobility. Rehabilitation and pain management are integral to the recovery process post-amputation.

  • Screw tail Amputation: Screw tail amputation involves the surgical removal of a portion of a dog's tail to address a condition where the tail curls tightly around itself, causing skin and hair irritation, infection, or even necrosis. This condition, often seen in certain breeds with tightly curled tails, results from a genetic predisposition or improper tail docking. Surgery is required when the screw tail leads to persistent discomfort, recurrent infections, or skin damage that cannot be managed with conservative treatments. Amputation aims to alleviate pain, prevent further complications, and improve the dog's overall comfort and hygiene.

Eye Surgeries

Entropion: Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the cornea, leading to irritation and potential damage to the eye. This can be uncomfortable and painful for your dog. Fortunately, entropion surgery is a common and effective solution. Entropion surgery is a procedure to correct the inward rolling of the eyelids in dogs. During the surgery, the veterinarian carefully adjusts the eyelid to return it to its normal position. This adjustment prevents the eyelashes and skin from rubbing against the surface of the eye, which alleviates discomfort and prevents potential damage to the cornea.

Grid keratotomy:  Grid keratotomy is a surgical procedure performed on dogs to treat deep corneal ulcers that don't respond to conventional therapy. It involves making multiple shallow cuts (keratotomies) in the cornea, which helps promote healing by releasing tension and stimulating tissue repair. This procedure is crucial when other treatments fail to resolve the ulcer, preventing further damage and potentially saving the dog's vision.

Cherry eye: Cherry eye surgery addresses a protruding gland in the eye's third eyelid, which can cause discomfort and potential complications if untreated. The surgery involves repositioning the gland back into its normal position and securing it to prevent recurrence. It's important to perform this surgery promptly to prevent dry eye syndrome and other eye issues. Early intervention ensures your dog's eye health and comfort are maintained.

Eye Enucleation: Eye enucleation surgery in dogs is to surgically remove an eye that is causing pain and discomfort. There are several cases that require this surgical procedure such as blindness, painful eyes (severe eye pathology), severe melting ulcer or descemetocele ulcer.

Conjunctival Grafts (for descemetocele ulcers): Conjunctival graft surgery for descemetocele ulcers involves transplanting healthy tissue from the conjunctiva (thin, clear membrane covering the eye) to cover and protect the descemetocele (a thinning or perforation in the cornea). It's necessary when the descemetocele ulcer is deep and threatens to perforate the cornea, risking severe infection or loss of the eye. This procedure helps to promote healing, prevent further damage, and restore the eye's structural integrity.
